Inspired by our September guest speaker Sarah Jaquette Ray and her book “A Field Guide to Climate Anxiety,” here are three actions you can take to calm your nerves in a chaotic climate:
1. Build Capacity
We need all the energy we can get to make meaningful change. Anxiety only depletes our energy. Some days just taking care of ourselves is the best thing we can do for the environment. Adopt mindfulness practices. Connect with loved ones. Be in nature. Play and have fun!
2. Resist Urgency
There is power in the pause. Meaningful change will come about through proactive efforts rather than hasty actions that may cause more harm than good. Take a breath. Look at the big picture. Take thoughtful steps forward. Slow hope can go a long way!
3. Hack The Story
Share a positive narrative. Negative narratives only keep us paralyzed. It helps the 10% of humanity causing the problem to maintain the status quo. Drop the apocalypse story. Share stories of strength, ingenuity, and community that are building a healthier tomorrow.
