About the event
“It is folly to think that we can destroy one species and ecosystem after another and not affect humanity. When we save species, we’re actually saving ourselves.”
-- Joel Sartore
You and I are witnesses to a rare and cataclysmic event in the natural history of our home: the sixth mass extinction in Planet Earth's history. The current extinction crisis will be the most devastating mass loss of biodiversity since the demise of the dinosaurs 65 million years ago. Scientists estimate that one quarter of all mammals and one sixth of all birds are headed for extinction, and they believe we human beings are the likely cause.
Joel Sartore, noted National Geographic photographer, has made it his mission to document species before they disappear—and to get people to care while there’s still time.
Alarmed by scientific predictions about the loss of species, he decided to use his formidable talents to educate the public as his contribution to forestalling, or at least minimizing, the impending extinction crisis. His resulting creation, “The Photo Ark,” will inspire you not only to admire his extraordinary animal portraits, but to get involved in efforts to preserve the real lives they represent.
For this meeting, we'll view a recorded lecture by Joel Sartore, followed by a guided discussion led by our chapter's Environmental Justice and the Rights of Nature (EJRON) Committee for an opportunity to share your thoughts and feelings about the video, learn what others are doing, learn what you can do, and learn what is happening in California to fight for the lives of our native species.
Please join us to experience the amazing Photo Ark and contemplate how the extinction crisis will affect you and your family, as well as what you can do to help avert this catastrophe. Spread the word. You can help to educate others.
