About the event

Extreme Water and Weather in a Warming California

“Climate change is an increasingly big part of what’s driving weather extremes today. There’s a lot of misunderstanding about how a warming climate affects day-to-day variations in weather, but my goal is to push public perception toward what the science actually says." -- Dr. Daniel Swain

We know our planet is warming, but what will that actually mean for the weather in Southern California? Join our chapter meeting on March 10th to hear a clear-eyed explanation of what the coming decades will look like for Los Angeles. Our guest speaker Dr. Daniel Swain is a weather and climate scientist studying extreme events—including droughts, floods, storms, and wildfires—on a warming planet.

You may have seen clips of his interviews on CNN or BBC, read his quotes in the New York Times, or spotted his name on last year's Time100 Next list of 100 emerging leaders from around the world who are shaping the future. He's the leading media expert when climate disasters strike, engaging extensively with journalists and media partners to serve as a climate and weather science liaison and working tirelessly to facilitate accessible and accurate coverage and conversations around climate change. He also authors the widely-read Weather West blog (weatherwest.com), which provides real-time perspectives on California weather and climate. Dr. Swain currently holds joint appointments as a climate scientist at California Institute for Water Resources within University of California Agriculture and Natural Resources (UCANR) and as a research partner at the NSF National Center for Atmospheric Research

Come dive into the realities of our changing weather patterns with a leading expert in the field and one of the best climate communicators on the planet. This is one meeting you won't want to miss!
